As the weather changes it is a fact that it stresses our immune system. How do you know if your immune system is on high alert? You’ll start to notice symptoms like sneezes, stuffy nose, sore throat, aches, fever, chills, and cough. With Halloween and the sugar fest just around the corner, expect to see, hear and experience at least one of those symptoms in the coming weeks or months. While people will make assumptions about the virus that has taken hold, no matter what it is, supporting immunity and seriously watching your sugar intake is your first line of defense. The body does not have an immune system, it IS an immune system.

Yes, as we have less daylight, our ability to absorb vitamin D from the sun will get to its all-time low. It will continue that way until about April, so supplementing with Vitamin D3/K2 becomes important. However! Vitamin D is NOT the be-all and end-all for immune health during Northern Michigan colder day’s. There are many nutrients that feed the immune organs and enhance it’s innate ability to fight ALL infection. Zinc Chelate is essential for a strong immune response AND also for hormonal balance! Vitamin C is essential in preventing colds, congestion, and infection. Vitamin A is equally important because it keeps the mucous membranes healthy, which means a stronger environment to airborne germs. Standard Process has a great combo, Cataplex AC and is best used to build up one’s resistance in wintertime. Medi-Herb’s Echinacea Premium is amazing at modulating the immune system and works best when taken for prevention long term. This is the most potent echinacea on the market! Immuplex is a combination that feeds the 5 main organs of the immune response- the thymus, the spleen, the long bones (bone marrow), the stomach and the liver. I personally take 4 of these a day for maintenance and 9/day for acute illness. Congaplex is another great infection fighter. This is THE primary products for colds, flu, and congestion. Calcium  is another HUGE player. Calcium is vital in the functioning of our immune system. Depletion of tissue calcium not only leads to increased virus and bacterial infections, but can be a general indicator of susceptibility to severe illness with higher mortality rate. When we become feverish, this warming of our body releases calcium making this mineral available to assist our body to protect itself from an assault. To properly absorb calcium, we need a good source. Fresh mineralized spring water is the best. Calcium lactate is the next best. Calcium carbonate is the worst, and unfortunately, is the most common form of calcium in over the counter vitamin products. For CHILDREN, my top infection preventers are Congaplex Chewable, Catalyn Chewable (a great multi-vitamin), SP Immune Children’s Chewable & Kiddi-Flora Chewable probiotic.
