Anti-Inflammatory Medications Put Your Heart At Risk

Last summer the FDA issued a strong warning regarding the safety of NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). It’s about time! Here at BBL we’ve known for a long time that these medications wreak havoc on your health; now there’s research that substantiates that as well.

The FDA has been reviewing the safety of NSAIDs since 2005 and as a result come to some alarming conclusions.

Here is an excerpt from the announcement on the FDA website:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is strengthening an existing label warning that non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke.”

The announcement goes on to say that the increased risk of stroke and heart attack can occur even in cases of short term use and in people without risk factors; however, the risk is compounded with long term use and higher dosages.

The FDA also announced that “patients treated with NSAIDs following a first heart attack were more likely to die in the first year after the heart attack compared to patients who were not treated with NSAIDs after their first heart attack.”

Inflammation is a natural part of the healing cycle. In a healthy body, the inflammation occurs, the body heals the problem and the inflammation is gone. In a situation where the inflammation is never controlled it can actually lead to more tissues damage and can perpetuate a cycle of pain that’s very hard to break. NSAIDs reduce the inflammation and can make you feel better short term, but they do not cure the cause.

Although this is concerning information for those of you who are using these medications, you do not have to worry. There are alternatives that work that do not shorten your life! There are many supplements & dietary/lifestyle techniques that can lower your inflammation to get to the source of your pain.

When you are healing the body with nutrition it reveals itself in layers. I have often said it is like peeling layers of an onion. It is also like putting together a puzzle. It seems like a big pile of hard work, but there’s ways to break it down. Sometimes this is by finding the big pieces first, with small pieces fitting in later. Even better, finding the outline first, and filling it in as we go along, doing only what our bodies can handle. When you come into Big Beautiful Life for Nutrition Response Testing®, in essence you are offering me the job of helping you fit those pieces together. Your trust will help me to help you decide how to proceed. Whichever way you are entering in the healing process, I’ve listed a few things that you can benefit from by changing now – sooner instead of later.

Switch from antiperspirant that contains aluminum to a natural deodorant. This will help your body because you will decrease your toxic burden. When you do this you may have more body odor initially. But, the worsening of sweating and odor is temporary as your lymphatic system detoxifies aluminum and other toxins. Once you get past the initial discomforts, the benefit to your body is long term. In that regard, there are many natural deodorant alternatives in every store these days. Try one! I have found the Burt’s Bee’s and Tom’s brands to work well, however, if one stops working I switch it up and can come back to it later.

Filter your drinking and shower water. We offer filtered water for anyone who comes into our Big Beautiful Life office. A Water Purifier for drinking water is the best solution we have found for removing viruses, bacteria, parasites, cysts, and chemicals without removing minerals. It is also good to filter the water you shower or bathe in to decrease your exposure to toxins. Also, make sure you are drinking enough filtered water to flush the toxins out of your tissues!

Get a Safe Space Protection Device to protect you from EMF’s. “Research now links long term exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) with chronic health issues, from stress, fatigue to cancer. Overwhelming numbers of scientists now agree that EMFs created by cell phones, power lines and other technologies are carcinogens.” We recommend using them in your home, on your cell phone, on your computer or wireless devices. Using these products can protect your cells from the damage caused by EMF’s.

If you’re female, don’t wear an underwire bra. Also, don’t wear a bra to sleep. Underwire bras can disrupt the way your body is sending messages. Wearing an underwire can also negatively impact your lymphatic flow. The lymph system needs to move to rid your body of immune challenges and toxins.

Listen to your body. Get adequate rest. In the beginning phases of Nutrition Response Testing® at Big Beautiful Life Chiropractic & Wellness, we are encouraging your body to heal. If you are more tired than you would like, it could be that your body is in a healing mode, and it needs sleep to heal.

Depression Around the Holidays

rockwell familyI don’t know about you but for some, the holidays can be an emotionally rough time. For these people, the holiday blues usually begin with Thanksgiving and peak at Christmas. It could be because of all the high expectations placed upon individuals this time of year. Likewise, it could be due to the stress of having to do so much work in so little time. The days growing shorter and the nights lingering far too long have an impact too. Perhaps the impetus to feel thankful somehow elicits the opposite reaction.

What does depression look like? Maybe you can’t get out of bed. Maybe you can’t find the motivation to get things done. Maybe you don’t have the desire to do the things you used to love to do. Maybe you cry at the drop of a hat. Maybe you are grieving still, and it’s been a year or more since your loved one passed. Maybe you’ve had thoughts of suicide and you wish you could just end this feeling.

The medical approach to this mental state is an anti-depressant. It may be that your anti-depressant helped in the beginning, but unfortunately over time, anti-depressants can actually cause a depletion in serotonin. This brings about more feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. You may also begin to experience other symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. An anti-depressant is really only a band aid for a short period of time.

The truth is, no matter how many episodes of depression you have experienced, you are not your illness. The label “depression” does not define who you are but how you are suffering. If you start to believe that having depression makes you inherently defective, remind yourself that you are a normal person responding to an abnormal condition. As the great 20th century visionary Pierre Teilhard de Chardin put it, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

How to Build Up Your Immunity!

We often think about enhancing immunity as building up our immune system to fight things. Where this is true, it is equally important and true to support our immune system to intelligently NOT to respond to things. How to do both: build and maintain a healthy gut. Ever notice that the intestines look similar to the brain… all squiggly and folded? Well there is a Gut-Brain connection AND 80% of your immune system is in the gut! Optimizing the gut during this season change is vital to remaining resilient.  In your gut you have a ton of different bacteria that NEED to be there… these are your PRO-Biotics or intestinal flora. They are the good guys that have many functions: Their presence keeps the bad bacteria in check and under growth control; Your flora creates a “rainforest” effect on the inside lining of your intestinal wall so that the lining is not “naked” and exposed to the world coming thru it (think of yourself like a donut. Your skin is on the outside exposed to the environment and then there is one long tube from your mouth to your anus which also has direct contact with the outside environment); Your flora optimizes the adsorption of nutrients from the food you eat; AND they work with the immune system as a front line.  Therefore, it is very important to create a healthy gut lining. If you or your child has taken an antibiotic (a bad bacteria and good bacteria killer) than you can guarantee the gut is off. Eating yogurt won’t do it despite what the TV commercials tell you. It is important to replace the good guys, also known as re-colonizing the gut.  Generally, the best way to do this is by taking a pre-biotic (the housing and food for the good guys) and a pro-biotic (the good guys) for a period of time, Dr Jena Hullman, DC usually recommends at least 10 days.  It is very important to get a quality supplement as they are not all created equal!

Another very important fact to consider when optimizing gut function is DIET. We Americans eat too much sugar and processed foods (which break down into sugar in our bodies). SUGAR WEAKENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM! Every time you have sugar it’s like punching your immune system in the face, knocking it unconscious and waiting ~30 minutes for it to come to again. Beyond diet, I highly recommend enhancing the immune system with a combination of herbs and whole food supplements that specifically target and support immune tissue. But I Want Ice Cream!

If your family is anything like mine, then they often ask for the less-than-healthy treats their friends are eating like…ice cream. While you are in the process of reducing white refined sugar, here is a non-dairy option made from full fat coconut milk, naturally sweetened with honey. As an occasional summer time treat, it’s a creamy alternative to the formaldehyde laced, chemically laden ice creams at the supermarket. Remember to eat sparingly, as even natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup aren’t meant to be consumed very often. Try substituting stevia or coconut nectar as they have a lower glycemic index.

Vanilla Coconut Milk Ice Cream
2, 14 ounce cans of full fat coconut milk?1/3-1/2 cup of honey (stevia or coconut nectar, add slowly until sweet)?2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Combine all of the ingredients well. I usually have to use a whisk to get the honey to combine with the coconut milk. Make into ice cream according to the directions on your ice cream maker. “Ripen” in the freezer for a few hours and serve. Will last a week or two in the freezer. I like to use an alcohol based vanilla extract as it seems to help keep the ice cream from getting as hard.

Chocolate Coconut Milk Ice Cream??

Honey or maple syrup used in this recipe also works. Just use a little less than you would for the coconut sugar.

2, 14 oz cans of coconut milk (not lite! I used the brand Thai Kitchen)
1/3 cup of coconut nectar, plus two tablespoons (use the more wet, pasty type found in a jar), or stevia drops to taste
2/3 cup of cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
a dash of sea salt

Combine all of the ingredients together in a large bowl, and blend with an immersion blender (or you could use a regular blender or food processor, perhaps). Make according to your ice cream maker’s instructions. Let ripen in the freezer for a couple of hours and enjoy.

Designed Clinical Nutrition

Are all vitamins and supplements the same?


Designed Clinical Nutrition is not ‘over-the-counter’ vitamins.  Over-the-counter vitamins are pharmaceutically engineered chemical fractions of vitamin structures reproduced in a laboratory. They are not “whole food” and the body does not actually recognize these as anything even vaguely beneficial.

Because they are not made from whole foods, over-the-counter vitamins lack the essential synergistic elements normally present in WHOLE foods.

An example of a whole food could be carrots.  Carrots are high in Vitamin A Complex.  A “complex” is something made up of many different parts that work together.  Synthetic vitamin A does not contain the whole “Vitamin A Complex” found in nature.  They synthesize the one component, beta-carotene and call that Vitamin A. The same is true with Ascorbic Acid which is only one tiny fraction of Vitamin C.

If one actually were deficient in any of the components of Vitamin A Complex, one would be wise to seek out a supplement that was made from whole foods that were rich in this complex – such as carrots – not from chemicals re-engineered in a laboratory to look like one minuscule fragment of the Vitamin A Complex that has erroneously been labeled as “Vitamin A.”

In other words, the body is not stupid. You can’t give it an eggshell, call it an egg and expect it to nourish the body like a whole egg. It is just a fragment and will not have the same effect, if any.

Inherently flawed scientific studies done with these fractionated, synthetic vitamins repeatedly “prove” that vitamins don’t do much good for anyone! That is completely true when you are talking about these pharmaceutically-produced chemical compounds. With whole food, live vitamins or supplements its an entirely different story

Parasites In You?

Ahh, yes. I said PARASITES. I’m sure visions of evil worm-type creatures come to mind but alas, this is not how they all are. There are small parasites which are one-celled organisms and large parasites which are egg laying.  Regardless of which type, they are both detrimental to your health as they are not symbiotic creatures meaning they benefit, you lose.  Parasite infestations are also WAY more common then you would think.  You don’t have to travel to a tropical island or third world country to pick up one, they are living right in your back yard or more likely in your pets.  Here are likely places we pick them up (or more often their eggs):

Water is the primary way parasites infect humans. For example, over 50% of our lakes, river streams and creeks are infected with the protozoa parasite Giardia Lambia. This parasite is not killed by chlorine and is steadily finding it’s way into urban areas with “treated” drinking water. Symptoms of an infestation include, diarrhea and cramping that lasts for over a week and is most often misdiagnosed as the stomach flu.
ALSO when swimmers have parasites and they swim in places with others, the water is then contaminated with eggs from their bodies. It only takes a very small amount of swallowed water to become infected.

You can obtain parasite eggs from other humans very easily. Since most infections come from the anal-oral route think about this – someone has parasites, they use the restroom, do not wash their hands afterwards, then they sit down and use the salt shaker on the restaurant’s table – they have just deposited microscopic eggs onto this object. You are the next person to sit at this table and use the salt shaker – you then lick your finger or even put your hand to your face – you are now the new host to parasites. Parasite eggs can live under human fingernails for up to 2 months. Think of how many common objects you come into contact with on a daily basis. Even more common infections come from kissing, holding hands, sharing eating utensils and of course, sexual contact.
Usually if one family member is a host to parasites, the entire family is infected.


By petting or grooming animals, you are picking up eggs that pass from them to us via hands, nose and mouth. ALSO parasite infected fleas and ticks and parasite infected animal feces are concerns. This is why walking barefoot where animals have defecated is a major source of parasite infections – especially when you CAN’T SEE the actual animal feces – you just happen to be walking where they have been before. THINK about this – when your pet (or someone else’s) licks their anus, they are depositing thousands of eggs onto their tongues – then they lick you and those eggs have just been transmitted to their new host. YOU. Pets and domesticated animals are not the only ones spreading parasites – mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, lice and all other biting insects transmit protozoa (one cell) parasites to humans.


Undercooked meats are a very high source of parasite infections. Commercial pork products are also notorious for infections – bacon, ham, pork chops, cold cuts, hot dogs, etc. Also cuts of meat such as beef, lamb, chicken and fish contain parasite eggs. Sushi (raw fish) alone contains eggs and larvae of several species of parasites. We trust the cattle, pork and chicken producers to keep their livestock wormed on a regular basis, but it is noted that over 50% of animals that go to slaughter are parasite infected.

Unwashed fruit and vegetables are also a big source of parasite carriers.  With a huge demand for fruit and vegetables, we Americans import 30 billion tons of food per year. Some of this food comes from countries where animal manure and human feces are used as fertilizer. This practice greatly increases the spread of parasites. The practice of eating out is also on the rise. Salad bars, infected food handlers, and improperly washed fruits and vegetables are all sources for parasites.


In our modern age, world travel is a way of life for many. These travelers are bringing home parasites that were once almost unknown in America. Airplanes are a great source for parasite transmission. It’s very common for a family to go on vacation and bring back uninvited guests with them. We also have a huge influx of refugee and immigrant populations who are bringing us their countries’ parasites.


Internal parasites and their waste products can reduce food absorbtion by causing inflammation of the intestinal wall. Food might also get stuck resulting in excessive toxins, smelly farts, bad breath and bloating. If organs such as liver and kidneys cannot get rid of the toxins, then poisons might get out through skin causing skin problems and hair loss. Damaged nervous system and stress hormones give origin to insomnia. Some bloodsucking worms leave open wounds resulting in darker feces. The loss of blood can cause iron deficiency, anemia and dizziness. Other symptoms caused by parasitic infections include (but are not limited to):

  • loss of appetite
  • chills
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • urinating problems or pain
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • headache
  • immunodeficiency
  • itching
  • jaundice (yellowish eye whites and skin)
  • joint pain
  • memory loss
  • muscle pain and spasms
  • nausea or vomiting
  • rash
  • shortness of breath
  • stomach pain
  • swelling
  • sweating and grinding teeth while sleeping.

Wow! I know this can be disturbing news, but don’t fret.
