Anti-Inflammatory Medications Put Your Heart At Risk

Last summer the FDA issued a strong warning regarding the safety of NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). It’s about time! Here at BBL we’ve known for a long time that these medications wreak havoc on your health; now there’s research that substantiates that as well.

The FDA has been reviewing the safety of NSAIDs since 2005 and as a result come to some alarming conclusions.

Here is an excerpt from the announcement on the FDA website:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is strengthening an existing label warning that non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke.”

Here is the link to the full article:

The announcement goes on to say that the increased risk of stroke and heart attack can occur even in cases of short term use and in people without risk factors; however, the risk is compounded with long term use and higher dosages.

The FDA also announced that “patients treated with NSAIDs following a first heart attack were more likely to die in the first year after the heart attack compared to patients who were not treated with NSAIDs after their first heart attack.”

Inflammation is a natural part of the healing cycle. In a healthy body, the inflammation occurs, the body heals the problem and the inflammation is gone. In a situation where the inflammation is never controlled it can actually lead to more tissues damage and can perpetuate a cycle of pain that’s very hard to break. NSAIDs reduce the inflammation and can make you feel better short term, but they do not cure the cause.

Although this is concerning information for those of you who are using these medications, you do not have to worry. There are alternatives that work that do not shorten your life! There are many supplements & dietary/lifestyle techniques that can lower your inflammation to get to the source of your pain.

Any recommendations on the correct supplementation for you is dependent on the cause of your pain and your body’s needs. If you are taking one of these medications and would like help finding alternatives, come see me. I can help you make a plan to become NSAID free and to conquer your pain.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Jena Hullman, DC

Healing – Sooner vs. Later

Live the healthy life you've dreamed of.

Live the healthy life you’ve dreamed of.

When you are healing the body with nutrition it reveals itself in layers. I have often said it is like peeling layers of an onion. It is also like putting together a puzzle. It seems like a big pile of hard work, but there’s ways to break it down. Sometimes this is by finding the big pieces first, with small pieces fitting in later. Even better, finding the outline first, and filling it in as we go along, doing only what our bodies can handle. When you come into Big Beautiful Life for Nutrition Response Testing®, in essence you are offering me the job of helping you fit those pieces together. Your trust will help me to help you decide how to proceed. Whichever way you are entering in the healing process, I’ve listed a few things that you can benefit from by changing now – sooner instead of later.

Switch from antiperspirant that contains aluminum to a natural deodorant. This will help your body because you will decrease your toxic burden. When you do this you may have more body odor initially. But, the worsening of sweating and odor is temporary as your lymphatic system detoxifies aluminum and other toxins. Once you get past the initial discomforts, the benefit to your body is long term. In that regard, there are many natural deodorant alternatives in every store these days. Try one! I have found the Burt’s Bee’s and Tom’s brands to work well, however, if one stops working I switch it up and can come back to it later.

Filter your drinking and shower water. We offer filtered water for anyone who comes into our Big Beautiful Life office. A Water Purifier for drinking water is the best solution we have found for removing viruses, bacteria, parasites, cysts, and chemicals without removing minerals. It is also good to filter the water you shower or bathe in to decrease your exposure to toxins. Also, make sure you are drinking enough filtered water to flush the toxins out of your tissues!

Get a Safe Space Protection Device to protect you from EMF’s. “Research now links long term exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) with chronic health issues, from stress, fatigue to cancer. Overwhelming numbers of scientists now agree that EMFs created by cell phones, power lines and other technologies are carcinogens.” We recommend using them in your home, on your cell phone, on your computer or wireless devices. Using these products can protect your cells from the damage caused by EMF’s.

If you’re female, don’t wear an underwire bra. Also, don’t wear a bra to sleep. Underwire bras can disrupt the way your body is sending messages. Wearing an underwire can also negatively impact your lymphatic flow. The lymph system needs to move to rid your body of immune challenges and toxins.

Listen to your body. Get adequate rest. In the beginning phases of Nutrition Response Testing® at Big Beautiful Life Chiropractic & Wellness, we are encouraging your body to heal. If you are more tired than you would like, it could be that your body is in a healing mode, and it needs sleep to heal.

All of these things come up at some point in a Nutritional Program such as we offer in our office at Big Beautiful Life. If you’re not already enrolled in our Nutrition Response Testing® Program, I encourage you to check it out!

Regardless, if you make some of these changes now, you will see improvements in your overall well-being.

Depression Around the Holidays

rockwell familyI don’t know about you but for some, the holidays can be an emotionally rough time. For these people, the holiday blues usually begin with Thanksgiving and peak at Christmas. It could be because of all the high expectations placed upon individuals this time of year. Likewise, it could be due to the stress of having to do so much work in so little time. The days growing shorter and the nights lingering far too long have an impact too. Perhaps the impetus to feel thankful somehow elicits the opposite reaction.

What does depression look like? Maybe you can’t get out of bed. Maybe you can’t find the motivation to get things done. Maybe you don’t have the desire to do the things you used to love to do. Maybe you cry at the drop of a hat. Maybe you are grieving still, and it’s been a year or more since your loved one passed. Maybe you’ve had thoughts of suicide and you wish you could just end this feeling.

The medical approach to this mental state is an anti-depressant. It may be that your anti-depressant helped in the beginning, but unfortunately over time, anti-depressants can actually cause a depletion in serotonin. This brings about more feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. You may also begin to experience other symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. An anti-depressant is really only a band aid for a short period of time.

The truth is, no matter how many episodes of depression you have experienced, you are not your illness. The label “depression” does not define who you are but how you are suffering. If you start to believe that having depression makes you inherently defective, remind yourself that you are a normal person responding to an abnormal condition. As the great 20th century visionary Pierre Teilhard de Chardin put it, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

So, let’s look at an alternative approach. Nutrition Response Testing® and Chiropractic are natural approaches to healing the body and feeding it the nutrients it needs to function normally. This is key to healing the underlying causes of your depression. At Big Beautiful Life, we work from a dietary standpoint, a supplemental one and by allowing your body to perceive itself appropriately. Each body is different. Your body has specific needs. The cause of your depression may be different than your friend or twin sister who has depression. We do not do a one-size-fits-all or cookie cutter approach program. Your program at our office is tailored to fit your body precisely. Together we will find the reason for your depression and help your body to start healing.

Although the factors that cause depression for one person can be different for another person, instituting lifestyle changes that minimize or correct for these various precipitating factors is a focus of holistic recovery.

I understand. I have been there. Call to set up your first appointment, and together we will get to the root cause of why you are struggling with depression.

I was lucky enough to hear about Dr. Jena Hullman, DC through my niece. In December 2013, I went to her appointments with her for support (and interest on my part too). After listening to all that was said I was totally behind what my niece was doing with Dr. Jena.

I had not been myself since I had the flu in Dec. of 2012. Short of breath and no energy were my main complaints, but in July of 2013 I tried to start a new job. Prior to this I had always been in pretty good shape (I painted the whole garage by myself the summer before!) so I was very active.

After working a week at the new job, I started feeling like I was not going to be able to do it. This was unnatural for me to have to admit I couldn’t do something! My bosses kept encouraging me to give it more time. I ended up staying on for a month. The day I gave my 2 week notice, I took myself to urgent care that night because I thought maybe I was having bad anxiety: my heart was beating not only fast but really out of rhythm. The doctor there called the ambulance to get me to Munson Medical Center, and I spent the next ten days in the hospital, getting tests run, and being monitored.

I was sent home with a monitor that I wore for a month. During that month I sat in my recliner…I was able to get up and use the bathroom, but even things as simple as making a meal was too much. I would take a break to sit down every 5 minutes at least, even standing in one place was exhausting!

In the meantime my heart specialist was studying and researching my condition. It was called V-tach (Ventricular tachycardia), but he was trying to find the cause of it and he said there was no cure. When my month was up I went in for a consultation and he let me know that he thought I was a good candidate for a procedure called ablation. He would go up the artery in my leg and over to the heart and burn the tissues that were causing my heart to misfire. I agreed to have it done and it was performed on Oct 5th, outpatient, AND I was awake through most of the procedure. He said that after 3 months I for sure would be  back to normal.

After 1 month, I went in for a checkup because I was still unable to do much of anything.  After running another test and checking my vitals  he said he was convinced my heart was doing great and whatever was causing this was not my heart. I made an appointment with my family doctor and she sent me to get a breathing test and see a respiratory specialist.

The specialist told me my lungs were fine and he wasn’t sure why my doctor sent me to him. I explained what had been happening, and he agreed something was off, but he was sure it had to be my heart. He had a phone conference with the heart specialist and afterwards, he stated both are feeling it is the other one’s field. However, he agreed to check into things further and get back to me with a plan. I didn’t hear anything for 3 weeks.

After this happened, I was lying in bed one morning feeling so defeated; I was trying to get a grasp on my life. I was starting to believe it had to be all in my head (or something) but I didn’t even know how to go about fixing that. Finally, I had a really good heart to heart prayer with my God, and pleaded for guidance.

Within minutes I started thinking about my experience with my niece, when she went to see Dr. Jena. The thought was illuminating. I thought, “Duh, why hadn’t I thought about that for myself?”

Later, I had a good talk with my husband about it all because I knew insurance didn’t cover Nutrition Response Testing®, so it would all be out of pocket. After all, what if it didn’t help?

It’s important to note that at this point, I had called my family doctor back and asked for her advice about what to do now. I told her I was thinking about going to see a nutritionist and was advised that a nutritionist was not going to help with what I had going on.

On the other hand, my husband was supportive of what I felt was best. On Valentine’s Day after our talk, he gave me the best gift ever! He sat me down and told me to go ahead and see Dr. Jena, and not to think of the money part. He wanted me to do whatever I feel in my heart is right, and promised we will figure out the money together later.

I have been on Dr. Jena’s program since Feb 14th, 2014. I cannot tell you all the wonderful feelings I have gone through since then.

I  really felt it in my heart after the first visit, “this is the answer to my needs,”  but I was trying to be really smart about it, so I asked myself lots of questions about my goals, and I realized, “I really want to learn how to live better!”.  Even though I honestly thought the majority of my life I ate well ( I was the kind of mom who home canned while my kids were little, and I always tried to serve balanced meals), the advice Dr. Jena gave me helped me realize some changes had to take place.

When my family was raised, and my husband and I opened our own business, I bent the rules and started eating fast food way more often than not, and grabbing whatever was available quick without thinking of how it was effecting me… I just had no time for home cooking.  Now that has changed.

There is so much I enjoy about my visits to Dr. Jena. I love sitting in her waiting room and reading the information and health tips/facts on her monitor. Every time I go, I learn at least one thing new. It’s funny, even though I’m enjoying the amount of information I’m learning, not all of the feelings I have gone through are good. Sometimes what I learn makes me angry, such as being hoodwinked by the media and advertisers and the government!  I also feel sad about how many of my friends and relatives I see, knowing what would help them have such a healthier life. Yet I often don’t know how to tell them without offending or turning them off. I just have to hope that what they see will eventually sink in (like it did with my niece and myself).

One of the things I really like about working with Dr. Jena is that it is so personalized. I get muscle tested to KNOW if my body needs it AND she even doses it for what my body needs. I have been taking vitamins most of my life and since I was eating badly, I really concentrated on trying to compensate by taking more vitamins. I was taking a recommended dose initially because it sounded like I had symptoms that it could help. So I was taking a multiple vitamin, calcium with magnesium and vitamin D, B complex, Fish oil, and an immune booster. Plus I was taking several prescriptions – one for high cholesterol, one for depression and anxiety, a pill for acid reflux, and a pill that was supposed to keep my heart in better rhythm. I am now off of everything I was taking beforehand and on the good, whole-food supplements Dr. Jena recommended, with no complications and I’m feeling great!

As a result of the program Dr. Jena has me on, I have lost weight, gained energy, and daily I feel like “dancing on the inside.” (I have even been teased because when somebody asked me how I was feeling, I have actually broke out in dance. It’s hard not to!) I have got my life back!

There’s lots of good news. I am back to work at our business, gardening almost daily, mowing the lawn, weed whacking and all. I’ve been putting on big parties, most recently a shower with over thirty people. At this event, I made most of the food for a taco bar. A week later, I hosted a coming home party for my son, and successfully put forty-two people into our yard with a potluck meal.

I am planning to go in for my yearly checkup soon, with a new medical doctor, but I really feel confident that I am a healthier person by far than I was four months ago. (Recovery is not overnight by the way!) I know, if nothing else, the weight loss is making me healthier, so I do not feel nervous about whether I was doing the right thing or not.

Dr. Jena’s program really educated me as I was progressing. Every week I had handouts to read and incorporate into my life. It sometimes seems it is a lot of work, but I took it very seriously, and still do. I know I would not have gotten the same great results if I hadn’t taken it so seriously. I also know how very important it is, and if I get away from my good habits, I now notice the effects from it. I am sticking with my Nutrition Response Testing® program because I just so very much want my health back, and want to stay healthy!  Thank you Dr. Jena and Big Beautiful Life!

But I Want Ice Cream!

If your family is anything like mine, then they often ask for the less-than-healthy treats their friends are eating like…ice cream. While you are in the process of reducing white refined sugar, here is a non-dairy option made from full fat coconut milk, naturally sweetened with honey. As an occasional summer time treat, it’s a creamy alternative to the formaldehyde laced, chemically laden ice creams at the supermarket. Remember to eat sparingly, as even natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup aren’t meant to be consumed very often. Try substituting stevia or coconut nectar as they have a lower glycemic index.

(Both of these recipes were taken from the website: On this website, you will find other fun flavors as well.)

Vanilla Coconut Milk Ice Cream
2, 14 ounce cans of full fat coconut milk?1/3-1/2 cup of honey (stevia or coconut nectar, add slowly until sweet)?2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Combine all of the ingredients well. I usually have to use a whisk to get the honey to combine with the coconut milk. Make into ice cream according to the directions on your ice cream maker. “Ripen” in the freezer for a few hours and serve. Will last a week or two in the freezer. I like to use an alcohol based vanilla extract as it seems to help keep the ice cream from getting as hard.

Chocolate Coconut Milk Ice Cream??

Honey or maple syrup used in this recipe also works. Just use a little less than you would for the coconut sugar.

2, 14 oz cans of coconut milk (not lite! I used the brand Thai Kitchen)
1/3 cup of coconut nectar, plus two tablespoons (use the more wet, pasty type found in a jar), or stevia drops to taste
2/3 cup of cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
a dash of sea salt

Combine all of the ingredients together in a large bowl, and blend with an immersion blender (or you could use a regular blender or food processor, perhaps). Make according to your ice cream maker’s instructions. Let ripen in the freezer for a couple of hours and enjoy.

Designed Clinical Nutrition

Are all vitamins and supplements the same?

Designed Clinical Nutrition is not ‘over-the-counter’ vitamins.  Over-the-counter vitamins are pharmaceutically engineered chemical fractions of vitamin structures reproduced in a laboratory. They are not “whole food” and the body does not actually recognize these as anything even vaguely beneficial.

Because they are not made from whole foods, over-the-counter vitamins lack the essential synergistic elements normally present in WHOLE foods.

An example of a whole food could be carrots.  Carrots are high in Vitamin A Complex.  A “complex” is something made up of many different parts that work together.  Synthetic vitamin A does not contain the whole “Vitamin A Complex” found in nature.  They synthesize the one component, beta-carotene and call that Vitamin A. The same is true with Ascorbic Acid which is only one tiny fraction of Vitamin C.

If one actually were deficient in any of the components of Vitamin A Complex, one would be wise to seek out a supplement that was made from whole foods that were rich in this complex – such as carrots – not from chemicals re-engineered in a laboratory to look like one minuscule fragment of the Vitamin A Complex that has erroneously been labeled as “Vitamin A.”

In other words, the body is not stupid. You can’t give it an eggshell, call it an egg and expect it to nourish the body like a whole egg. It is just a fragment and will not have the same effect, if any.

Designed Clinical Nutrition is exactly that:

Designed : Especially prepared  and based on a specific plan.

Clinical: Pertaining to the results gotten in clinical use (In this case- actual practice on hundred’s of patients over many years)

+ NutritionReal Food, designed by nature, to enable the body to nourish and repair itself and grow healthfully.

It is whole foods in a tablet, capsule or powder that are concentrated in a vacuum, cold-process system that preserves all of the active enzymes and vital components that make it work as Mother Nature intended. These real food supplements have been designed to match the needs of the body, as determined by the positive response shown when tested against the active Nutrition Response Testing® reflexes that are found on your individual Nutrition Response Testing® analysis.  These are nutrients you are simply not getting, or not assimilating, in your current diet.

These deficiencies may be due to your past personal eating habits but it is for sure due, in some large extent, to the lack of quality in the foods commercially available in grocery stores or restaurants today.

What about “Natural” Vitamins?

Vitamins that are being used all over today generally only need to have a small percentage of their actual content derived from natural sources to be labeled “natural”. The fact is if your vitamins are not derived from whole foods they often make you even more deficient and nutritionally “out-of-balance.” They can create other health problems because they do not contain all of the co-factors found in nature that make the vitamins work.

Inherently flawed scientific studies done with these fractionated, synthetic vitamins repeatedly “prove” that vitamins don’t do much good for anyone! That is completely true when you are talking about these pharmaceutically-produced chemical compounds. With whole food, live vitamins or supplements its an entirely different story

1. Through an analysis of your body’s reflexes, we help you to determine the exact nutrients you need to supplement your diet, in order to bring about balance and better health.

2. We make these highly concentrated therapeutic formulations available to you in tablets, capsules or in powdered form to “supplement” your current diet.  That’s why they are called “food supplements.

3. Since the supplements are meant to supplement and restore nutrients your body hasn’t been getting through your normal diet and eating habits. The supplements and Designed Clinical Nutrition program are only one part of your full Natural Health Improvement Program.  Depending on your individual situation, we will also require that you make some specific changes in your diet, eating and exercise habits so you can fully restore your health and maintain it for life.

How are these whole food supplements produced?
One example of a Designed Clinical Nutrition supplement that we use is called Catalyn.  This product is produced by starting with a wide variety of carefully chosen organically grown vegetables, taking the water and fiber out using a vacuum, low heat process – without heating or cooking the vegetables, and then utilizing the concentrated food to make a bottle of Standard Process brand Catalyn Tablets.

The key to this whole procedure is the way it is done, using the Standard Process method devised by Dr. Royal Lee.

  1. Standard Process’ nutrients are derived from plants grown on their own farms, in soil free of pesticides – and no chemicals are ever used. The PhDs check the soil before the seeds are sown, to make sure of the fertility of the soil – even the weeding is done by hand.
  2. The machinery involved in the processing of these products is made of glass and stainless steel only.
  3. The temperature used in processing harvested plants is never raised above the point of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so that the active ingredients are not cooked; they remain active and alive. They have a very long shelf life without preservatives of any kind.

Your vitality, health and energy are derived from live food.  Most foods today are dead – or are not really foods at all –  they’re highly processed pseudo-foods like boxed cereals, canned vegetables, soda pop, “convenient” food, etc.

Anyone can easily see the difference between these dead, devitalized, pseudo-foods with synthetic or isolated vitamins and nourishing, live real food supplemented with whole-food based Designed Clinical Nutrition.

There is a great deal of technology and know-how behind what we do. Having been designed through decades of clinical use on tens of thousands of patients, and on patients from many different types of health care practitioners, you can be assured that Nutrition Response Testing® is capable of evaluating and solving your health concerns.

A complete Nutrition Response Testing® analysis can be done on each patient on each subsequent visit, thereby revealing the next layers of dysfunction so these can also be addressed and corrected.

In this way, each patient gets a completely individualized handling, in the correct sequence for his or her body. Very much like opening a combination lock, you must use the right numbers in the right sequence and in the right direction at the right time – then the lock falls open.

By following the correct sequence as revealed through Nutrition Response Testing®, you don’t “shot-gun” your diet or supplements.  With a correctly done Nutrition Response Testing® analysis, we can determine the correct food supplements for you – designed to give your body the best possible chance of getting well and staying that way.

It is possible to reverse disease and achieve true health

Many people we see in our practice have eaten themselves into their current state of ill-health, to one degree or another. The deficiencies or imbalances lead to a breakdown in resistance, or immunity, and a loss of the ability to cope with environmental stresses (chemical, microscopic, or otherwise).

The good news is that with Nutrition Response Testing® and Designed Clinical Nutrition it possible to reverse the process and achieve Total Health Restoration.

Spring Cleaning!

Spring Cleaning the Liver:  What is the Standard Process Cleanse Program?

Standard-Process-Cleanse-SupplementsCleanses and detox programs are everywhere. From Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow endorsing her favorite cleanse, to stores like Wal-Mart, who carry liver and intestinal cleanses. Many patients come into my office asking me if I think that they should do a cleanse.

For some people, it can be a very important step in improving their health and changing their life.

The fact is this: We live in a toxic environment, and our bodies are overwhelmed and bombarded by toxins every day.  Toxins enter the body through the digestive tract, by food additives, contaminated soil (heavy metals: especially cadmium, aluminum and mercury), and soft drinks, etc. The average American consumes 15 lbs. of additives and 200 lbs. of sugar per year!!

The Standard Process 21 Day Cleanse is one way to safely detoxify the body.  Not all cleanses achieve this goal safely, gently, and effectively.  A cleanse that claims to detoxify the body in under three weeks is usually too good to be true. The key factor in an effective and safe cleanse is that it supports Phase Two Liver detoxification.

Let me speak nerd for a moment: Phase Two liver detoxification is essential for the actual removal of toxins from the body. Many cleanses only support Phase One Liver detoxification, which is when toxins are packaged and moved to other parts of the body. Don’t recirculate the garbage!

I have done my share of research and have found the Standard Process Purification Program meets the goals to safely, gently, and effectively detoxify the body. What I like about this program is that it lasts for three weeks (this time frame is great for changing habits), is not based on deprivation (you can add in meat and fish after the 10th day and good fats like oils, etc.), is a phytonutrient, whole food based program with nothing synthetic or processed, AND it supports both phases of detoxification.

Get Ready For MIT

Omg, I am so excited to host the Michigan Institute of Thermography in late May! Have you ever heard of thermography breast scans? Too many people have not and it’s a shame. In my most pure value as a doctor, if you know anything about me it’s:

  1. I want to help you and everyone you know.
  2. I am all about prevention when it comes to health care. (We are talking about health care and not sick treatment, right?)
Well at a brainy seminar, I met Dr Barsoum from the MIT and he has an amazing service where he travels to different locations to provide the most professional and cutting edge thermography scans to women.  Imagine wearing infrared night goggles to see at night. Whatever is hotter will offer more heat and therefore more color.  Before any tumor arises in breasts, the tissue MUST increase the vascular supply to the area = more bloodflow = hotter.
Getting your first scan can show you what is hot or becoming hot. You can then DO something about it! Change it BEFORE it becomes anything greater. How novel, the idea of prevention. I LOVE IT. Before offering any service or product to my clients I test it out for you.  I had my own scans done back in November. It was very comfortable and private- no awkward moments at all! Yay.  I stood behind a curtain loud and proud and held my arms out for 15 minutes (while I read a book, Can you say multitasking?:)  My body acclimated to the air temperature and then a woman’s hand came into my space from behind the curtain and adjusted the infrared camera, took ~6 pictures and we were done. 2 weeks later I received my results in the mail and discovered my left breast has a moderate-risk spot and now I’m DOING something about it. I really look forward to MIT coming up in May for my follow-up!  If you or anyone you know care about their breast health, please look into this and/or ask me about it! Or better yet, register for May’s MIT visit. Ask Dr. Jena or Lynette for details.

Parasites In You?

Ahh, yes. I said PARASITES. I’m sure visions of evil worm-type creatures come to mind but alas, this is not how they all are. There are small parasites which are one-celled organisms and large parasites which are egg laying.  Regardless of which type, they are both detrimental to your health as they are not symbiotic creatures meaning they benefit, you lose.  Parasite infestations are also WAY more common then you would think.  You don’t have to travel to a tropical island or third world country to pick up one, they are living right in your back yard or more likely in your pets.  Here are likely places we pick them up (or more often their eggs):

parasites, Traverse City, Nutrition Response Testing®, Dr. Jena Hullman, DC

Water is the primary way parasites infect humans. For example, over 50% of our lakes, river streams and creeks are infected with the protozoa parasite Giardia Lambia. This parasite is not killed by chlorine and is steadily finding it’s way into urban areas with “treated” drinking water. Symptoms of an infestation include, diarrhea and cramping that lasts for over a week and is most often misdiagnosed as the stomach flu.
ALSO when swimmers have parasites and they swim in places with others, the water is then contaminated with eggs from their bodies. It only takes a very small amount of swallowed water to become infected.

You can obtain parasite eggs from other humans very easily. Since most infections come from the anal-oral route think about this – someone has parasites, they use the restroom, do not wash their hands afterwards, then they sit down and use the salt shaker on the restaurant’s table – they have just deposited microscopic eggs onto this object. You are the next person to sit at this table and use the salt shaker – you then lick your finger or even put your hand to your face – you are now the new host to parasites. Parasite eggs can live under human fingernails for up to 2 months. Think of how many common objects you come into contact with on a daily basis. Even more common infections come from kissing, holding hands, sharing eating utensils and of course, sexual contact.
Usually if one family member is a host to parasites, the entire family is infected.

By petting or grooming animals, you are picking up eggs that pass from them to us via hands, nose and mouth. ALSO parasite infected fleas and ticks and parasite infected animal feces are concerns. This is why walking barefoot where animals have defecated is a major source of parasite infections – especially when you CAN’T SEE the actual animal feces – you just happen to be walking where they have been before. THINK about this – when your pet (or someone else’s) licks their anus, they are depositing thousands of eggs onto their tongues – then they lick you and those eggs have just been transmitted to their new host. YOU. Pets and domesticated animals are not the only ones spreading parasites – mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, lice and all other biting insects transmit protozoa (one cell) parasites to humans.

Undercooked meats are a very high source of parasite infections. Commercial pork products are also notorious for infections – bacon, ham, pork chops, cold cuts, hot dogs, etc. Also cuts of meat such as beef, lamb, chicken and fish contain parasite eggs. Sushi (raw fish) alone contains eggs and larvae of several species of parasites. We trust the cattle, pork and chicken producers to keep their livestock wormed on a regular basis, but it is noted that over 50% of animals that go to slaughter are parasite infected.

Unwashed fruit and vegetables are also a big source of parasite carriers.  With a huge demand for fruit and vegetables, we Americans import 30 billion tons of food per year. Some of this food comes from countries where animal manure and human feces are used as fertilizer. This practice greatly increases the spread of parasites. The practice of eating out is also on the rise. Salad bars, infected food handlers, and improperly washed fruits and vegetables are all sources for parasites.

In our modern age, world travel is a way of life for many. These travelers are bringing home parasites that were once almost unknown in America. Airplanes are a great source for parasite transmission. It’s very common for a family to go on vacation and bring back uninvited guests with them. We also have a huge influx of refugee and immigrant populations who are bringing us their countries’ parasites.

Internal parasites and their waste products can reduce food absorbtion by causing inflammation of the intestinal wall. Food might also get stuck resulting in excessive toxins, smelly farts, bad breath and bloating. If organs such as liver and kidneys cannot get rid of the toxins, then poisons might get out through skin causing skin problems and hair loss. Damaged nervous system and stress hormones give origin to insomnia. Some bloodsucking worms leave open wounds resulting in darker feces. The loss of blood can cause iron deficiency, anemia and dizziness. Other symptoms caused by parasitic infections include (but are not limited to):

  • loss of appetite
  • chills
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • urinating problems or pain
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • headache
  • immunodeficiency
  • itching
  • jaundice (yellowish eye whites and skin)
  • joint pain
  • memory loss
  • muscle pain and spasms
  • nausea or vomiting
  • rash
  • shortness of breath
  • stomach pain
  • swelling
  • sweating and grinding teeth while sleeping.

Wow! I know this can be disturbing news, but don’t fret. Nutrition Response Testing

What is it and How Can it Help YOU?

Perhaps its common for you to feel tired, or you suffer from headaches, feel unclear and foggy, or experience an overall lack of energy… or maybe you are managing a more serious health complication that has developed over time.  Regardless of your own personal state of health or illness, chances are you could benefit from Nutrition Response Testing®.

Dr. Jena Hullman uses non-invasive muscle testing to pin-point and identify weaknesses and imbalances in your body. Imbalances are then corrected through a specially designed program using whole foods nutrition and supplements.  Since your body is used directly for analysis, (versus doing lab tests) it is faster and tends to be just as (if not more) accurate. There are no huge expensive machines, no drugs, surgery, needles or lab fees to cover. Watch Dr Jena’s video describing Nutrition Response Testing® here.

There are little or no negative side effects with Nutrition Response Testing®.  Care Plans are as individual and unique as you are. Although every case is different, we often hear enthusiastic reports from clients in as little as 4-6 weeks and it usually costs less than your monthly health insurance premium. The fastest recoveries are often from those who have most closely adhered to their recommended nutritional program.

Sound good? So, how do you begin? Call Big Beautiful Life (231.421.9189) today and schedule your initial Nutrition Response Testing® appointment. If you prove to be a Nutrition Response Testing® candidate, Dr Jena will make recommendations of whole foods supplements (check out Standard Process-the line of high quality whole food supplements we use at BBL), herbs, and dietary/lifestyle adaptations.  Dr Jena will continue to monitor your body and organ reflexes at each visit, and your program will be adapted to you and your current and ever changing state of health.

In Dr Jena Hullman’s own words “It is my experience that nothing can help you as much!”
